MATH 201:  INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • to become familiarized with the language and concepts of statistics
  • to become aware of the critical role that statistics plays in the scientific method
  • to develop the ability to look at statistical claims with a critical eye
  • to become more discerning consumers of statistics with strong emphasis on data analysis
  • to develop skills to design and execute experiments.

TEXT:
Interactive Statistics, Aliaga & Gunderson, Prentice-Hall 2nd ed.

CALCULATOR:
This course will be taught with the TI-83 graphing calculator. It will allow you to enter, plot, and summarize data quickly and conveniently. The TI-83 also has many enhanced
statistical features that can be used for the more sophisticated and lengthy statistical analyses.

THE WORK:
In addition to the three hourly tests, there will be regular written and reading assignments. Since there is a lot of writing in this course, vocabulary and grammar are important. It is also important that you keep up with all the new terms and algorithms that accumulate with each chapter. The
Material is essentially cumulative in nature so knowledge of material in one chapter will be needed for succeeding chapters.

ATTENDANCE:
There are 28 class days this semester for T-TH classes. Since 3 of them will be test days, only 25 will be class days. You cannot afford to miss even one!!!!!!!!   Attendance will be taken at every class.

ASSESSMENT:

  • 3 “hourly” tests @ 100 pts each
  • Graded assignments for a total of 75 pts
  • Final exam @125 pts
  • Attendanced grade: 75 points minus 3 points for every absence over 2.
